Social Support

Nepalese new arrivals receive general supports of different aspects from the following organizations.

Language Support 

General Support

​Language support is given by various organizations in Hong Kong to  help Ethnic Minority to get adapted to the new environment in Hong Kong. Among the programs implemented by the organizations, English and Cantonese classes are available for them to learn. Examples of these organizations are Hong Kong Christian Service (CHEER Centre), New Home Association (HOME Centre), and Christian Action (SHINE Centre). Cantonese is the dominant language spoken in Hong Kong, giving the ethnic minority Cantonese class can increase their chance of finding a job thereby making them easier to merge with the general public. As Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city, learning English is of great importance to increase their competitiveness.

Offering English and Cantonese Classes for ethnic minority residents in Hong Kong

Hong Kong Christian Service - CHEER

Offering Chinese and English Course, including daily Cantonese, occupational Cantonese and occupational Egnlish, for New Arrivals.

Hong Kong Christian Service - CHEER

Introducing New Arrival Award Scheme to encourage and help new arrival ethnic minorities to have better plannings, useful knowledge and skills for better adaptation in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Labour Department

Printing leaflets about the labour legislation of part-time employment in Hindi version for helping ethnic minorities to understand better.

New Home Association - Home Centre 

Providing integration programmes, after-school tutorial classes, social harmony programmes, innovative programmes, counselling and referral services, and membership scheme for the ethnic minorities without any charge.

Hong Kong Education Bureau 

Printing leaflets in minority languages for their better understanding.

DAB

Setting up a Ethnic Minorities Service Centre to help the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

Here is the location of the Hong Kong Nepalese Federation.

The social support (language classes) acts as an extension of the activities mentioned to achieve the formation of multiplex ties within the networks. Considering the similar nature of the different means of support, it is possible for members of the Nepalese Community to join more than one supportive event.
