There are about 20,000 Nepalese in Hong Kong. Large groups can be found in Yuen Long and Yau Tsim Mong. Our focus is to investigate the Nepalese in Jordon and raise our awareness of the Nepalese living in our neighborhood. Most of the Nepalese live in Kam Tin of Yuen Long and in Jordon near Gun Club Hill Barracks. One-third of them live on the strip of land that borders Yau Ma Tei and Jordan. It is believed that Nepalese settled in Jordan because of its proximity to a Gurkha barracks. Instead, some Nepalese just want to save their money and live cheaply so that they can return to Nepal. Jordan is considered cheap and convenient.

Some local residents said there was an old Chinese woman operating in a small real estate store under the stairs of an old building in Shanghai Street. That woman was the first agent who was willing to help Nepalese finding the place to live. At that time, many agents refused to help them due to the language difference. Although it is not clear how the old lady could communicate with Nepalese who were barely able to speak Cantonese, there were many Nepalese living near Shanghai Street and a lot of Nepali communities emerged in the surrounding areas. We tried to find the store according to the location we have heard from local residents; however, the store seems to be replaced by a currency exchange store already.

Minority groups in Hong Kong usually have lower economic power, thus their place of living depends greatly on the transportation network and rent fluctuation. In recent years, the rent in Shanghai Street has increased, they have moved to the streets nearby, for example, Canton Road and Temple Street etc. Nepalese are mainly living in the south of Parkes Street since the rent is cheaper. There are many Nepalese stores and restaurants in these areas, where they have developed their own community. Nevertheless, it seems that the local residents do not aware of the fact that there are many Nepalese living in the district, due to the lack of interaction and a common language.

Here is a news articles focusing on the Nepalese living in Jordon area.
