- Convergence (Reduce Social Distance)
- Converge to HK society by speaking Cantonese by speaking Cantonese
- Converge to Magar/Nepalese Community by speaking Nepali
- Accommodation (A group tries to learn the dominant language of society)
- All Rana family members has been learning Cantonese
- Psychological reason (Sense of belonging):
--> Feel that they belong to HK society: If any tragedy happens to HK, they feel sad too
- Instrumental reason (Usefulness of dominant language):
--> Point out that their 2nd language English cannot always replace Cantonese in HK
Under some situations Cantonese must be used e.g. interlocutors do not know English
- Divergence (Differentiate Oneself from Group)
- Kids of the children generation prefer speaking English to other languages
- English is their second language and the medium of instruction in schools
- Social network sites, hollywood movies and english music/ band
--> No divergence
